SA Style Superhero Hits Our Screens

Its been interesting to note that while Anifex have led the commercial animation charge here in SA over the past decade or so, theres been a few other players emerge who are fast making a name for themselves. And Resin are one of them. Weve seen their name grace our digital pages a few times over the past months, and now theyve cranked out a new ad they seem pretty darn pleased with.

According to the self confessed geeks at Resin, the opportunity to work on the new Powerball ad with agency KWP! was a plum project we had to work on. The chance to develop our own superhero of sorts and the enormous potential to express ourselves creatively and take on the project as a whole  apparently had them frothing at the mouth. Of course, not ones to do things the regular way, their Thor isnt quite your classic Norse god of thunder, but rather a laconic Aussie with a bloody big hammer.

In line with the old you learn something new every day adage, they were also quick to point out Powerball is played on a Thursday - which was actually named after Thor. We thought they were full of crap on this one but Googled it and it seems Thursday really does originate from Day of Thunor (An old Germanic word for Thor.) Who knew eh? But we digress. The shoot was done on the 4K RED camera (for those of you who dont know this is a big deal new piece of technology but we wont bore you with the details here) and was a composite live action and CG execution and the set was inspired by Celtic iconography and granite-like relics.

Thor himself, a bit of a Jack Black look-a-like from Melbourne was spot on for our vision said Director Grant Lovering. But it was the full scope of the project that had the Resin team salivating with Grant confirming Only a handful of projects come along that enable you to showcase the capability of the entire studio and we feel this is one of them. Nurturing the project from agency script to completion and handling all aspects including directors treatment, concept development, character design, environment design, casting, wardrobe, set design, live action production and direction, editorial, 3D, compositing and grade. There were a few other technical things they did as well, but we snoozed off somewhere between 3D tracking and roto. Suffice to say it sounds like they did a lot.

If youre not the kind of dweeb who gets excited by all those technical words and processes, heres one fact youll not only understand but find quite remarkable. According to Grant they finished on time without any late nights. Yeah, yeah, as if. Whatever the case, you can check out the first ad in the series here.
