If we had a shoe for every time a sensational international speaker came to Australia and skipped coming to Adelaide, wed have a bigger collection than Imelda Marcos and Carrie Bradshaw combined. So we were pretty darn excited to hear Andrew Baron was coming to town. Andrew who? we hear you ask... Ah, well, if you dont know who Andrew Baron is, you probably need to see him speak more than you know.
Back in the dark ages of blogging (ie 2004), Andrew started a little website called Rocketboom. You see, after working as a presidential campaign worker for John Edwards (the Democrat, not the guy who talks to dead people) and seeing online video really start to take off, he came up with the idea of broadcasting a mock newscast. At first a few hundred people thought it was kind of cool. But within about 10 months that figure had gone up a bit... to about 70,000! Now Apple supremo Steve Jobs uses it when doing demonstrations and even TV show CSI has used it in an episode. So itd be fair to say this thing has caught on.
In fact, after Rocketboom pulled 200,000 viewers (around the same as a news show on MSNBC), former media exec Prince Campbell went so far as to see it as the beginning of the end for regular TV when he claimed Just like the internet killed the music industry, its about to do the same thing to broadcast TV. Even the New York Times said he was helping to write the obituary of TV.
So, back to why you should be interested. Well, for starters, if you havent already worked out this is a massively big growth area that's gonna affect your life and your job, (so you need to at least pretend to know a little bit about it), best you start studying for that bus drivers license now. And as Kate Elton from the Portable Film Festival who is responsible for bringing him over says, this is your chance to come listen to someone thats been there, has done it, is still doing it and is successful. Listen to his thoughts on the future of advertising, branded content and online advertising and where he thinks its gonna go.
Think about it: heres a guy who charges US$20,000 for a weekly sponsorship on his site and generates over $1million annually in ad revenue alone so its no coincidence or exaggeration hes recognised as the leading strategist of branded content and online video advertising in New York and internationally. And apparently the dude is more than happy to discuss online revenue strategies including motion advertising, pay-per video, licensing to various distribution platforms, subscriptions for extra content and other stuff we know absolutely nothing about.
We think its bloody brilliant hes coming to Adelaide, (A big thanks to the SAFC and MRC for helping to make it happen) so well be there with bells on. If youre ready to drag yourself well and truly into the 21st century and see whats happening next, maybe you should too.
