Just How Shallow Is The Local Talent Pool?

Today is an Adtown first - a two part story. Whoa! Yeah, yeah, we know... What can we say? Weve got so much to crap on about, were gonna spread it over two highly informative days! Lets get started then...

Weve all heard the so called experts crapping on about the skills shortage, but lets face it, we couldnt care less about whether or not other companies and industries (Who gives a shit about mining, right?) can find people, we care about us! So what better person than local employment agency guru Kirsty Parkin from Aquent to tell us what the deal is around town.

Well, lets start with freelancers. These used to be the people who were so crap, they couldnt find a job. As the old joke went: What does a freelance designer say all day? Would you like fries with that?. But these days were well and truly in a Free Agent Nation and its different story. Now we reckon the only people with jobs are the ones who arent good enough to go out on their own. But hey, thats just our only half serious opinion and clearly its a load of rubbish. Sort of. What we can confirm is freelance work is a bit like sex - ie it tends to be quieter in the first half than at the end. So according to Kirsty, as we move into July, if youre a freelancer, this is the time you want to be a freelancer she said, because between now and the end of the year is when the busy period kicks in. Good news if you are a freelancer, slightly less good if you need one we suppose. Although were pretty sure Kirsty would be happy to help you find the perfect round person for your round hole... Oh dear, that square peg/round hole reference didnt come out quite like we meant it, but you get the idea. Of course, theres always our handy, albeit still kinda brief freelance directory as well - hint, hint!

For full time staff, it seems the job market is less seasonal, but not without its own peculiarities. For example, if youre a mid-weight Account Manager right now, youd be as happy as a Qantas baggage handler at a boogie board convention cause theres plenty of opportunities going around. But if youre a junior or even senior account manager, youre stuffed. Imagine being a senior account manager and lying down about your experience to pass off as a mid-weight just to get a job. Weird. But hey, they say thats what the markets looking for at the moment, or as Paris would say, thats whats hot right now.

The other job you can write your own ticket with is if youre a nerd. Ah, we mean web person with technical back end experience. And no, back end experience is not a euphemism for your sexual preferences! Apparently theres a forecasted growth of something like 60% in online marketing spend over the next five minutes, ah, we mean years. Even more importantly, when things tightened up in the London market recently, print jobs were hit hard, but online emerged mostly unscathed. Which is a bit of an indicator of what is likely to happen here.

So there's a few things to keep in mind about the local market... Sadly, weve well and truly busted our work limit for today, so tomorrow were gonna look at... well, youll just have to wait and see (as will we cause we havent bloody written it yet). But therell be a few more trends worth being aware of and some hints for job seekers. Probably. Either way, its sure to be riveting stuff so make sure you check it out.
