If there’s one thing we love here at AdTown, it’s when we get to use words like ‘boobs’ and ‘kerfuffle’. But if there’s two things we love, it’s a can-do, have-a-go attitude. Which is why we love the guys at The Insider so much.
Here’s two twenty-nothing guys who are still students at UniSA, who have just published their own guide book for international students. James Martin, who is studying Marketing and International Studies, and Sam Trezise, who sadly for him is studying Commerce, realised some of their international student mates were having trouble settling in to life in Adelaide. Must be the hustle and bustle of the big city! Defying true Gen Y form, they didn’t just whinge about it, or even dream about doing something, they rolled their sleeves up and did something about it! We love that kind of energy!
In addition to a software learning curve that was steeper than an interest rate rise, the biggest thing they learned was “how to communicate with other businesses. We had no idea what we were doing at the start but we kept on changing our pitch and working out 'marketing speak' a bit better” James said. Sounds like they worked it out just fine.
While they won’t be retiring to the South of France, or even the South of Adelaide, on the proceeds, they are hoping next year will be more profitable for them. And in true idealistic style, they acknowledge this wasn’t just about the money (a sentiment we’re vaguely familiar with here at AdTown) and said “There were many long days and nights editing and writing but the experience of seeing an idea through to an actual product was the best feeling we've ever had”.
Their guide covers “everything from shopping to eating out to not getting ripped off by your landlord” and includes advertising from Myer, Medibank Private and Tourism SA amongst others. Oh, and we're pretty sure they'd be happy to hear from you if your clients wanted to advertise in the next edition. With interstate guides a possibility down the track, we’ll be keen to see where these go-get-’em young guys get up to next.
